they are usually synthetic hair and it can be weaven glued or temporarly cliped onto your hair to give you more length,volume,body,thickness ect..you can get them done in a salon. or you can buy clip on ones at a hair supply store ect..you can actually get real hair extensions but those can cost a fortune..What are extensions for hair?
